K-pop Band NewJeans Takes Break Amid Ongoing Contract Dispute

K-pop band NewJeans performed a sold-out show in Hong Kong on Sunday, but the event was marred by controversy as the group announced they are taking a break “out of respect” for an injunction that prohibits them from carrying out independent musical or commercial activities. The Seoul Central District Court recently sided with record company Ador, stating that NewJeans’ attempt to rebrand and break away from the label could damage its reputation.

The band’s members addressed their fans on stage, expressing their decision was not easy but necessary for their mental and emotional well-being. They claimed their contract with Ador is void amid allegations of mistreatment, including “manipulation,” “deliberate miscommunications” and workplace harassment. However, Ador disputes these claims, saying most of NewJeans’ allegations have arisen from misunderstandings.

The band’s hiatus comes after a long-running legal dispute with Ador over their attempt to rename themselves and break away from the label. The court’s decision suggests that NewJeans’ case lacks sufficient legal basis, according to a lawyer familiar with the case. NewJeans has been one of South Korea’s most successful pop acts since debut single “Attention” in 2022, but this setback may impact their future plans.

Despite fans’ backing and disappointment, Friday’s ruling is a major setback for the group, raising concerns about the implications for their career and reputation.
