Kankakee Realtor John McCracken Dies at 95

KANKAKEE — John McCracken, a lifelong resident and renowned real estate salesman, has passed away at the age of 95. A dedicated entrepreneur and pillar of the community, McCracken’s impact on Kankakee is still felt today.

Born and raised in Kankakee, McCracken founded his eponymous real estate firm, McCracken Realty, in 1963. The catchy slogan “Start Packin’, Call McCracken” remains a beloved phrase among locals, even decades after the business closed its doors.

Mccracken was an honest and committed businessman who worked tirelessly to serve his community. As a former director and president of the Kankakee County Board of Realtors, he received numerous accolades for his dedication, including being named Realtor of the Year and Broker of the Year.

Beyond real estate, McCracken’s passions included building and construction, which led to the development of over 50 homes in the area. He also operated a tire company before it went out of business and worked at Harris Bank in Chicago and Gould National Battery in Kankakee.

A true Kankakee enthusiast, McCracken was deeply connected to the local environment. He constructed the first water ski jump on the Kankakee River and offered lessons to those who wanted to try this beloved hobby. The river, which ran through his backyard, was a source of joy for him and his friends.

Mccracken’s legacy extends beyond his professional achievements. He was known for his kind heart, generous spirit, and infectious enthusiasm. Friends describe him as a sweet, gentle man with a gift of gab, who could converse with anyone about anything.

“John was a great friend to me and to many others,” said David Jaffe, McCracken’s closest friend of 40 years. “A great businessman, a strong community supporter and an absolute gentleman.”
