Kansas Adopts Accelerated Measles Vaccine Schedule

Kansas has become one of two states to update its measles vaccine recommendations, with 83 reported cases of the disease in the state as of June 2, 2025. Most cases are found in children and unvaccinated individuals.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends accelerating the measles vaccine schedule for some people, particularly those living in outbreak areas or traveling to affected regions. Under the new guidelines:

* Infants will receive their first MMR vaccine dose between 6-11 months of age, followed by a second dose at 12-15 months.
* Children over 12 months with only one dose may receive an early second dose, as long as it’s been 28 days.

According to Dr. Kelsey Zubiaur of Topeka Pediatrics, the vaccine is effective in preventing measles, offering 93% protection with one dose and 97% protection with two doses. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment advises individuals to consult their doctor with any concerns or questions about the vaccine’s safety.
