Kansas has seen a rise in measles cases over the past two weeks, with six active cases currently reported in the state. The cases are located primarily in Grant and Stevens counties, affecting children and teenagers under the age of 18.
The breakdown of the cases is as follows: one child under 5 years old, three between 5-10 years old, one between 11-13 years old, and one teenager between 14-17 years old. Measles is highly contagious, with up to 9 out of 10 close contacts who are not protected being at risk of infection.
To protect against measles, the Kansas Department of Health recommends receiving the MMR vaccine. However, all currently reported cases in Kansas are among unvaccinated individuals. The state’s health department is working on contact tracing, which aims to identify and notify close contacts who may be at risk of infection.
Measles vaccines are available at various medical facilities across the state. In contrast, Missouri has not reported any measles cases at this time, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
