Karla Sofía Gascón Accused of Insensitivity Over Old Tweets Ahead of Oscars

Karla Sofía Gascón, a Best Actress nominee for the 2025 Oscars, is facing backlash over old tweets that have resurfaced online. Journalist Sarah Hagi uncovered a trove of the actress’s past tweets, which date back to 2019-2024 and contain insensitive comments about various groups, including Black people, police officers, Islam, and her costar Selena Gomez.

Gascón has responded with a series of statements, including an apology and claims that some of the tweets were fabricated as part of a coordinated campaign to harm her Oscar chances. However, she also deleted her Twitter account amid the controversy and claimed that resurfaced tweets are “part of a plot against me.”

During a recent interview with CNN en Español, Gascón broke down in tears multiple times while defending some of the tweets. She denied writing a tweet that called Selena Gomez a “rich rat” and claimed that her statement about George Floyd was misunderstood. Gascón also defended past anti-Islam sentiments, citing her relationship with a Muslim woman as an example.

The actress stated she would not renounce her Oscar nomination despite being accused of racism and insensitivity. Instead, she maintained that she is innocent and her acting work is what’s being valued, not her personal views.

It remains to be seen whether this will be the last we hear about the controversy surrounding Gascón’s old tweets ahead of the Oscars.
