Actress Karla Sofía Gascón is facing backlash after past comments on social media were resurfaced, sparking controversy over her views on Muslim culture and diversity. The 52-year-old Spanish star was nominated for Best Actress Oscar earlier this month, becoming the first openly transgender actress to receive the nod.
Gascón’s since-deleted posts on X (formerly known as Twitter) included comments about Muslim culture, George Floyd, and more. One post reportedly read, “More and more the #Oscars are looking like a ceremony for independent and protest films… I didn’t know if I was watching an Afro-Korean festival, a Black Lives Matter demonstration or the 8M.” Another deleted post allegedly stated, “Is it just my impression or are there more muslims in Spain?”
Gascón recently addressed the resurfaced tweets in a statement to PEOPLE, saying she is “deeply sorry” for causing hurt and acknowledges her past comments. She also released a clarification on a recent video interview where she appeared to imply that fellow Best Actress nominee Fernanda Torres was involved in spreading negative rumors about her.
The actress’s comments have sparked concern among some, who are calling out Gascón for making Islamophobic statements. Netflix has not responded to PEOPLE’s request for comment on the matter.
