Karla Sofía Gascón Omitted from European Film Award Ceremony

Karla Sofía Gascón, the star of Spain’s equivalent of the Oscars, has been left out of the Goya awards ceremony after old social media posts surfaced that denigrated Islam, China, and African American George Floyd. The film, “Emilia Pérez,” had already won 13 Oscar nods before the scandal broke.

The movie tells the story of a Mexican drug cartel boss who transitions to life as a woman and turns her back on crime. Gascón’s comments have been described as “absolutely hateful” by director Jacques Audiard and disappointing by co-star Zoe Saldana.

Gascón, who has apologized for the comments, was dropped by her publisher and criticized by prominent politicians. Despite this, some argue that she should not be penalized based on her past tweets.

Writer Sergio del Molino argued in a column that Gascón’s artistic talent should be separated from her opinions, while writer Manuel Jabois condemned the “absurd cruelty” of her rejection but also acknowledged that there is a debate about how far it can go.
