Kathy Ruemmler, a former Obama White House counsel and current chief legal officer at Goldman Sachs, has been under scrutiny over her relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Recently released emails between the two have shed new light on their connection.
The exchange, which includes plans for a trip to Epstein’s private island and gifts he gave Ruemmler, reveals that Ruemmler was among a small group of advisers helping Epstein navigate legal and media scrutiny. In one email, Ruemmler responded to Epstein’s comment about men being the inferior gender with “Hard to believe that there is still an open question.”
Ruemmler has repeatedly said she regrets knowing Epstein and had “no knowledge of any new or ongoing unlawful activity on his part.” However, some experts have questioned her claims, citing inconsistencies in her statements.
The emails also show Ruemmler coordinating strategy with Epstein regarding a proposed interview with Virginia Roberts Giuffre, one of Epstein’s accusers. Ruemmler suggested edits to the interview, which were later included in a letter from Epstein’s lawyer, Martin Weinberg.
Ruemmler has maintained that she did not advocate on Epstein’s behalf with any third party and had no control over how he characterized her or their interactions. However, some have raised questions about her involvement in helping Epstein navigate his legal issues.
In one email, Ruemmler even offered to fly to Epstein’s private island, although the trip appears to have fallen through. The emails also reveal that Ruemmler sought career advice from Epstein at times, including when considering a job with Facebook.
Goldman Sachs has stood by Ruemmler, stating that Epstein’s behavior was “unsolicited favors” and gifts for his business contacts. However, the House Oversight Committee is exploring whether Ruemmler should be questioned about her involvement in helping Epstein.
