Reality TV star and former Bachelor contestant Katie Thurston has spoken out about her stage four breast cancer diagnosis after discovering liver lesions through a PET scan. The 34-year-old was initially diagnosed with stage three invasive ductal carcinoma in February but recently confirmed that her cancer had spread to the liver, placing her at stage four.
Thurston had been waiting for the results of a liver biopsy following a PET scan that showed “some spots on my liver that were a little suspicious.” She explained that she had not undergone a PET scan before and had focused on fertility treatments instead. The diagnosis was made 43 days after her initial breast cancer diagnosis, with no treatment administered.
Thurston is now undergoing a new treatment plan, which includes chemotherapy, starting next Friday. Despite the scare, she remains optimistic about her outcome, citing her triple positivity for estrogen receptor-positive, HER2-negative, and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive breast cancer. The lesions in her liver are described as “fairly small,” giving her confidence in her treatment.
Thurston shared the update on her Instagram account, explaining that her treatment will consist of six sessions spaced three weeks apart. She also clarified that her treatment plan for her liver is similar to the one for her breast cancer, as the cancer in her liver has spread from her original breast cancer rather than being a new type of cancer.
The reality TV star’s openness about her diagnosis and treatment plans aims to raise awareness and support for those affected by stage four breast cancer.
