Kayaker Narrowly Escapes Whale’s Mouth After Encounter

A kayaker, Adrián Simancas, shared a harrowing experience after being briefly sucked into the mouth of a humpback whale during a visit to Chilean Patagonia’s Strait of Magellan. The incident occurred on February 8 as Adrián paddled with his father, Dell, in the strait.

Adrián described feeling like he was “dead” and thought he had been swallowed by the whale, but fortunately, he emerged unharmed a few seconds later after being released by the massive animal. However, his ordeal wasn’t over yet, as he worried about his father’s safety and potential hypothermia.

Dell eventually reached Adrián and helped him to shore, where they could reflect on the encounter. Adrián believes that the whale may have approached him out of curiosity or to communicate. The humpback whale is an endangered species found in all oceans worldwide, typically feeding on krill and small fish.
