Ke Huy Quan returns to the big screen in “Love Hurts,” his first live-action film since winning an Oscar for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” The martial arts action-comedy follows Marvin Gable, played by Quan, as he navigates a complex web of crime and loyalty. When his former sweetheart Rose (Ariana DeBose) returns to exact her revenge on those who wronged her, Marvin must confront his past and team up with his fellow realtor Ashley (Lio Tipton).
The film’s tone veers wildly between action-packed fight sequences and sappy romantic moments, often feeling like a mismatch. Quan’s performance is endearing, but the script relies too heavily on gore and violence to make an impact. Director Jonathan Eusebio brings his stunt coordinator experience to life in the film’s most assured sequences, particularly during the action scenes.
Despite its similarities to Edgar Wright’s “Scott Pilgrim vs the World,” “Love Hurts” feels like a lesser effort. The film’s attempts at humor and heart feel forced, making it a skippable Valentine’s Day treat. With Quan’s return and reunion with Sean Astin, however, fans of 80s nostalgia may find some fleeting entertainment in this formulaic romp.
