Former Charger Keenan Allen is returning to the team after agreeing to a one-year deal, marking a reunion with quarterback Justin Herbert and a new challenge for wide receiver Ladd McConkey. The six-time Pro Bowler will join an offense led by offensive coordinator Greg Roman, who aims to mesh Allen’s skills with those of slot receiver McConkey.
Following Mike Williams’ surprise retirement last month, the team made the move to bring back Allen, 33, in a bid to bolster their receiving corps. Allen had previously spent 11 years with the Chargers before being traded to the Chicago Bears following the 2023 season. The deal comes amid concerns about his role in the slot position.
Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz acknowledged that Allen’s fit was a consideration but expressed confidence in his abilities. “We think [DJ Moore’s] played a lot of slot, and they were both on the field 80% of the time last year,” Hortiz said. The team is reportedly “fired up” about adding Allen to the mix.
The signing marks a significant change for the Chargers’ quarterback DJ Uiagalelei, who has switched from No. 13 to No. 7 after the arrival of his new teammate. Allen’s return is seen as an opportunity for the team to revitalize their receiving corps and capitalize on the opportunity that arose with Williams’ retirement.
