Ken Griffin’s $44.6M Stegosaurus Skeleton Goes on Display at AMNH

Citadel CEO Ken Griffin’s 27-foot-long Stegosaurus skeleton, purchased for $44.6 million, will be displayed at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City starting Sunday. The fossil, dated 150 million years old, is considered one of the largest and most complete Stegosaurus specimens ever found.

Griffin has loaned the skeleton to the AMNH for four years, allowing millions of visitors and researchers to see and learn from the specimen. Scientists plan to conduct research on “Apex,” which will be part of a new initiative focused on its biology, growth, and life history.

The massive Stegosaurus skeleton was previously owned by Griffin since July, when it sold at Sotheby’s for $44.6 million, making it the most valuable fossil ever sold at auction. After its display in the Kenneth C. Griffin Exploration Atrium, “Apex” will be relocated to the fourth floor, where it will anchor a new entrance to the museum’s fossil halls.

The AMNH will develop educational resources around “Apex,” and replace it with a cast of the skeleton after four years on display. This marks Griffin’s third significant donation to the museum, following his $16.5 million gift for a T. rex skeleton at the Field Museum in Chicago seven years ago.
