Kenan Thompson Opens Up About Living with GERD for Months

Actor and comedian Kenan Thompson, 46, has been open about his struggles with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) for the first time. The longtime Saturday Night Live star was diagnosed with the condition two years ago, which caused him to experience painful heartburn and disrupted his daily life.

Thompson’s symptoms worsened over time, making it difficult for him to perform at work. He tried self-medication with over-the-counter medications but found no relief. It wasn’t until he decided to see a doctor that he received an accurate diagnosis.

GERD is a common gastrointestinal disorder affecting over 65 million people in the US, often going undiagnosed. Thompson’s story aims to encourage others to speak up about their health concerns and seek proper help.

With the support of Phathom Pharmaceuticals, Thompson partnered with them for the “GERD IS NO JOKE” campaign. He created a humorous video series, “Kick Some Acid Cooking Show,” to raise awareness about GERD and its treatment, Voquezna. The actor believes that using humor can make discussing tough topics more approachable.

Now feeling better, Thompson credits his improved health to managing his lifestyle and meal decisions. His openness about his struggles with GERD aims to reduce stigma and encourage others to prioritize their health.
