The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is shifting its focus to “popular” shows that appeal to a broader audience, under the leadership of President Donald Trump and new president Richard Grenell. The change comes as the center seeks to address financial issues, including a significant debt burden.
Prior to Trump’s leadership, the Kennedy Center faced criticism over its inclusion of drag shows targeting children. Trump fired several board members who opposed this approach, citing a desire for a “Golden Age” in arts and culture. Grenell has defended the new direction, stating that the center must prioritize productions that sell tickets and generate revenue.
The upcoming season will feature Christmas-focused productions, as well as other shows that Grenell believes the public wants to see. The focus on “popular” content is seen as an effort to revitalize the Kennedy Center’s programming and ensure its financial stability.
In an exclusive statement, Grenell said, “We have to do the big productions that the masses want to see. So, you’ve got to be at the Kennedy Center in December because we are doing a big, huge celebration of the birth of Christ.”
