Ticket sales for events at the Kennedy Center plummeted by 50% after President Trump overhauled its board of trustees. The changes came amid Trump’s claims that he aimed to make the center “great again” and eliminate “woke” culture.
Trump replaced the center’s president, Deborah F. Rutter, with interim president Richard Grenell, who was previously the acting Director of National Intelligence. He also fired several prominent board members, including actress and comedian Issa Rae and TV producer Shonda Rhimes.
The center canceled performances by the touring children’s musical “Finn” and a planned concert featuring the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, D.C. Trump stated that the changes were part of his efforts to promote American history and traditions at the center.
As a result, several high-profile acts have withdrawn from upcoming events at the Kennedy Center, including actress and comedian Issa Rae and Canadian mystery novelist Louise Penny. The White House attributed the turmoil to the center’s decision to go “woke,” stating that it would ultimately lead to financial ruin.
The changes have sparked controversy and raised concerns about the impact on the arts and culture at the Kennedy Center.
