Kennedy Nominee’s Vaccine Comments Spark Outrage

Sen. Angela Alsobrooks grilled Department of Health and Human Services nominee Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., over his comments on vaccine schedules for Black Americans. In 2021, Kennedy claimed that “we should not be giving Black people the same vaccine schedule that’s given to whites because their immune system is better than ours.” The claim contradicts established medical guidelines, which recommend a standardized vaccination schedule to ensure protection against diseases.

During Thursday’s hearing, Alsobrooks pressed Kennedy on his remarks, asking what type of vaccine schedule she should have received. Kennedy’s response seemed to imply that Black people need fewer antigens, which Alsobrooks deemed “dangerous” rhetoric. The senator stated that such views would be a voice that parents would listen to.

Kennedy’s comments have sparked outrage and raised concerns about racial bias in the medical system. Studies have shown that many healthcare professionals believe false claims about immune systems among different racial groups. This bias can lead to inadequate treatment, pain management, and even death for Black Americans.

Alsobrooks announced that she will be voting against Kennedy’s nomination due to his “dangerous” views. The nomination marks Kennedy’s second confirmation hearing.
