Kent State University has terminated head football coach Kenni Burns, citing no specific reason for his departure. The school will conduct a search for a new coach after the 2025 season.
Burns had previously been placed on administrative leave with pay and was released from his contract amid poor team performance. Last season, the Golden Flashes went winless, marking their fifth consecutive losing record in school history.
The university’s decision has sparked a lawsuit against Kent State University by Burns’ lawyer, Lee Hutton. According to Hutton, the termination is “meritless” and Burns was facing challenges such as reducing off-field issues with players and improving team academics.
A source close to Burns revealed that the coach had been offered a buyout, but rejected it. The university has stated its focus will be on supporting student-athletes for a positive experience.
