Kentucky Derby Attendance on Pace Despite Global Uncertainty

The 151st running of the Kentucky Derby is set to take place on Saturday amidst global economic uncertainty, but Churchill Downs CEO Bill Carstanjen says demand for the event is strong. The company has paused a $900 million capital improvement project at its Louisville track due to rising construction costs caused by tariffs.

However, fan enthusiasm remains high, with international participation expected to reach new heights. This year’s Derby will be broadcast in 170 territories worldwide, making it the most widely watched event globally.

Famed horse trainer Bob Baffert is set to make a return to the Kentucky Derby after a three-year ban. His horse, Citizen Bull, will compete in the event, while his other horse was scratched due to a foot injury. Carstanjen praised Baffert’s reinstatement, saying “he earned his way into this event” and that everyone deserves second chances.

Despite global uncertainty, Churchill Downs is confident that this year’s Kentucky Derby will match last year’s demand, with CEO Bill Carstanjen stating that fan enthusiasm remains strong.
