Kenya Locks Down Amid Anti-Government Protests, 10 Killed

Kenya is under lockdown as authorities cracked down on anti-government protesters, killing at least 10 people. The protests, which began weeks ago, are over police brutality and poor governance. Demonstrators have been burning bonfires and throwing stones at police, while the authorities responded with tear gas and gunfire.

The unrest started after a blogger was killed in police custody last month, prompting calls for police accountability. Protests were also sparked by the one-year anniversary of anti-tax protests that resulted in 60 deaths.

Police have blocked major roads into Nairobi and most businesses are closed. The government has deployed additional forces to maintain order, but protesters say they will not be deterred. Experts warn that attempts to suppress protests will only make the government appear desperate and retrogressive.

The government had warned of violent consequences if protesters continued to engage in demonstrations. However, critics argue that the response is disproportionate and will only fuel further unrest. As one protester said, “They have blocked the roads, blocking us from our work. I am a roadside vendor and I am supposed to get to town and buy merchandise to sell along the road.”
