Khris Middleton’s trade to the Washington Wizards marks the end of one of the longest partnerships in recent NBA history, which spanned nearly 12 years alongside teammate and friend Giannis Antetokounmpo. The two joined the Milwaukee Bucks in 2013 and went on to combine for 738 regular season and playoff games, bringing the team its first NBA title in half a century.
Despite their championship win in 2021, injuries to both players prevented them from replicating that success. Middleton has struggled with repeated physical issues, limited to just 23 games this season after undergoing surgery on both ankles. Antetokounmpo acknowledged the impact of their partnership will be felt long after their playing days.
“For me, it’s a little bit bigger than business, it’s family,” Antetokounmpo said of his friendship with Middleton. “I know it’s business, but for me, Khris is my brother.” The trade brings an end to this close bond, but Antetokounmpo remains committed to his role in the NBA.
The trade also has financial implications for the Bucks, who project to be $31MM under the first apron. This will give them access to the non-taxpayer mid-level exception, even if certain players exercise their options. Meanwhile, coach Billy Donovan mentioned that the Bulls are not done pursuing deals after sending Zach LaVine to Sacramento.
In other news, Pistons guard Jaden Ivey is using aquatic therapy as part of his recovery from a broken left fibula.
