Kia Seltos & Soul Models Face Recall Over Engine Issues

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating another recall issue with Kia’s 2021-2023 models, specifically the Seltos and Soul subcompact SUVs. The recall centers around piston oil ring problems in the 2.0L inline-4 gas engines.

According to NHTSA documents, Kia started addressing the issue by having dealers inspect every affected vehicle using a vibration inspection test harness. However, this initial fix was followed by multiple changes, including adjustments on how to attach an alligator clamp to the battery negative terminal.

The most recent change, made on June 9, advises dealers not to use USB-C headphone adapters if their diagnostic tablet also has a 3.5-mm jack. The NHTSA has received 47 complaints about the new fix, citing that it is ineffective and inconsistent in deciding whether an engine replacement is needed.

Additionally, owners have reported issues with the repair process, including being denied warranty coverage after receiving a recall fix. The RMD’s investigation into these allegations may lead to further recalls and potentially more engine replacements if the remedy is deemed inconsistent.

In total, 137,256 vehicles were initially affected by Kia’s original recall due to potential oil ring manufacturing errors, which could cause increased oil consumption, abnormal noises, and even engine damage or fires.
