Kilauea’s Hidden Water Key to Volcanic Eruptions

Kilauea volcano’s water table plays a crucial role in its eruptions, according to USGS scientists. On July 25, researchers measured the depth to the water table at the Keller Well, located south of Halema‘uma‘u crater. The Keller Well, drilled in 1973 to a depth of 4,140 feet, has been used to monitor the hydrology of Kilauea’s summit region ever since. This information is essential for understanding the volcano’s behavior and predicting future eruptions.
