North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has vowed to further develop the country’s nuclear forces amid criticism from the United States, Japan, and South Korea over military cooperation in the region. During a visit to the defence ministry on Saturday, Kim stated that the U.S.’s deployment of nuclear strategic assets and war exercises are causing an “unnecessary tension” in the region.
Kim emphasized the need for a regional military balance and warned that North Korea will take countermeasures to ensure this balance. The North Korean leader also expressed support for Russia’s war with Ukraine, stating that the country’s army and people will “invariably support and encourage the just cause of the Russian army and people.”
The comments come amid heightened tensions between North Korea and its neighbors, particularly South Korea. Last month, South Korea accused North Korea of preparing to send more troops to Russia, while North Korean state media criticized South Korea’s military activities with the U.S.
Kim’s statements have been seen as a response to recent criticism from the U.S., Japan, and South Korea over North Korea’s nuclear program and regional security. The comments underscore the ongoing tensions between North Korea and its neighbors, and highlight Kim’s determination to maintain his country’s military capabilities.
