King Charles III has sent a message of condolence to the people of Myanmar following the deadly earthquake that struck the country on Friday. The 7.7-magnitude quake killed over 1,600 people and left hundreds more injured.
The King expressed his shock and sadness at the devastating loss of life and property, and offered “deepest possible sympathy” to those affected. He also acknowledged the extraordinary resilience of the Myanmar people in the face of ongoing hardship.
In his message, Charles referred to the tragic loss of sacred pagodas, monasteries, and other places of worship, and expressed his admiration for the country’s spirit. The UK Foreign Office has announced plans to send £10 million in humanitarian aid to support the response efforts in Myanmar.
The King, 76, was at his Highgrove estate after spending time in hospital earlier this week due to side effects from cancer treatment. He had cancelled a trip to Birmingham on medical advice and left London for his Gloucestershire residence.
