King Charles III Visits Canada Amid US 51st State Threats

Canada is bracing for King Charles III’s visit as he prepares to deliver the throne speech in Ottawa. The monarch’s trip comes after months of US President Donald Trump’s threats to make Canada the 51st US state. Royal expert Philippe Lagassé says the King’s visit serves as a “fire extinguisher” meant for emergencies, emphasizing his role as a symbol of Canadian sovereignty.

Lagassé likened the monarch to an appliance that’s only used in crisis situations, yet remains significant nonetheless. He noted that Trump’s admiration for the royal family could be the reason behind the US president’s interest in annexing Canada. However, not everyone is impressed by the royal visit, with some critics viewing it as a “big joke.”

The Canadian monarchy has faced criticism from Quebec nationalists and federal parties who reject its role in politics. The Parti Québécois has argued that the monarch’s presence is an anachronism, while others see it as a useful reminder to respect the institution.

As King Charles III arrives in Ottawa, Indigenous leaders like Perry Bellegarde are calling for recognition of Canada’s treaty relationship with the Crown. Despite ongoing tensions over Trump’s threats, the visit aims to reaffirm Canadian identity and sovereignty.
