King Charles to Address Parliament Amid Tensions with Trump’s 51st State Talk

King Charles III is set to visit Canada on May 26-27, where he will deliver the speech from the throne in Ottawa. The 76-year-old monarch’s visit comes as tensions between Canada and the US are rising over a proposed 51st state for Canada. During his four-day trip, King Charles will meet with Prime Minister Mark Carney and Governor General Mary Simon.

The throne speech is expected to focus on sovereignty and trade. Traditionally, the speech is read by the governor general, but this will be King Charles’ first time delivering it. The visit marks a significant event for Canada’s new parliament, which will open soon.

King Charles has accepted an invitation despite being treated for cancer. The royal couple will also attend community events, including a celebration of Canada’s diverse culture in Lansdowne Park. They will take part in a tree-planting ceremony at Rideau Hall and participate in full military honours during a carriage ride to the Senate.

The visit has been seen as an opportunity for King Charles to address tensions between Canada and the US. Prime Minister Carney met with President Trump earlier this month, where he stated that “Canada is not for sale.” The meeting came after Trump’s suggestion of making Canada the 51st state.

As a result, King Charles’ speech will outline the government’s plans to build Canada strong, focusing on sovereignty and trade. Despite his cancer treatment, Buckingham Palace said that the royal couple are “very much looking forward” to the programme.
