King Soopers Workers Go on 2-Week Strike Over Unfair Labor Practices

A two-week strike has begun at 77 metro-Denver King Soopers stores, affecting thousands of workers and impacting customers. The strike, which began on Thursday, is over unfair labor practices and the union claims the grocery chain has not addressed their concerns. UFCW Local 7 President Kim Cordova stated that the workers are using an unfair practice strike, while King Soopers President Joe Kelley disputes this claim.

The strike means unpaid days for striking workers, reduced staffing at stores, and limited services, including shortened pharmacy hours. Store owners have hired temporary workers to fill gaps in labor and adjusted store hours.

Customers must now decide whether to cross the picket line or shop elsewhere. While some people choose not to support the strike, others will continue to shop at King Soopers due to availability of certain products.

The strike is expected to impact customers, with over 8,500 workers joining the strike across the state by Friday. The union’s decision to extend the strike over work practices rather than monetary issues has raised concerns. As the strike begins, both sides seem determined to make their point heard.
