King Soopers Workers in Denver Metro to Go On Strike Starting Thursday

King Soopers employees in 77 metro and Front Range stores will walk out on strike starting Thursday, affecting around 10,000 union workers. The strike comes after months of negotiations between the union and the grocery chain, which failed to reach a deal.

The United Food & Commercial Workers Union Local 7 said King Soopers “failed to respond in any way” to the union’s requests for information on pricing and staffing data. In response, several stores voted to go on strike, with picket lines set up outside affected locations.

King Soopers stated that it respects employees’ rights to participate in a strike but will welcome workers who choose to continue working. The grocery chain plans to keep some stores open during temporarily modified hours from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

Pharmacies at impacted stores will operate on reduced hours, and delivery fees will be waived for orders over $35 until February 18. Meanwhile, other King Soopers workers in Fort Collins, Greeley, Longmont, and Loveland are preparing strike votes.

The strike is expected to last two weeks, with potential strikes in Colorado Springs and Pueblo following soon after. The union has warned that this is just the start of many pending strikes across the state.
