Kirk Cousins, the quarterback who lost his starting role to rookie Michael Penix Jr., attended the Atlanta Falcons’ mandatory minicamp on Tuesday, signaling his commitment to the team. The 14th-year veteran signed a four-year, $180 million contract with $100 million guaranteed in March 2024 but struggled with mobility and health issues, leading to his replacement.
Cousins focused on recovery and regaining mobility during the spring, acknowledging that he overestimated his recovery progress. He said his time away from full team activities was necessary for him to make significant progress on his body. Although he initially thought he was better than he actually was, Cousins is now getting back to a level of six or seven out of ten in terms of mobility.
Despite the challenges, Cousins has maintained a veteran mindset, emphasizing the importance of setting an example for his two sons and handling tough situations with resilience. Falcons head coach Raheem Morris praised Cousins for his professionalism and character, saying he’s a high-quality individual who handles drama with class.
Cousins’ teammates have also shown their support, with fellow quarterback Michael Penix Jr. stating that he’s always been the same guy from day one. The two quarterbacks reportedly told each other they got each other’s backs, a testament to the strong team dynamics.
