Kneecap Sweeps BIFAs with Four Craft Awards and Best International Indie Film

At the 2024 British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs), Sean Baker’s Anora took home the top prize for best international indie film, while the Belfast-based rap trio Behind the Bridge won four craft awards. The team picked up three more on Sunday, including best British independent film to director Rich Peppiatt and best debut screenwriter award. The film won seven BIFAs in total, with notable wins for Michael ‘Mikey J’ Asante’s original music and Gary Welch and Jeanette Rehnstrom’s music supervision.

Anora is a fiery Cinderella tale of an exotic dancer and her Prince Charming, which took the BIFA for best international feature film. Star Mikey Madison praised the film, calling it “special” and saying that Sean Baker is “dedicated to telling human stories.” The movie also received recognition from the Oscars, with Sandhya Suri taking home the award for best screenplay.

Other winners included Marianne Jean-Baptiste for best lead performance in Mike Leigh’s Hard Truths, Franz Rogowski for best supporting performance in Andrea Arnold’s Bird, and Olivia Colman, Jessie Buckley, and their ensemble cast for Wicked Little Letters. The ceremony also honored Rich Peppiatt as the best debut screenwriter, bringing recognition to his work on Kneecap.

The BIFAs return to London’s Roundhouse venue this year, with Peter Serafinowicz hosting the event alongside presenters Alicia Vikander, Martin Freeman, Indira Varma, and James Norton. The annual ceremony aims to celebrate the best of British film.
