The New York Knicks are set to meet with former Sacramento Kings coach Mike Brown and former Memphis Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins for their head coaching job next week, according to sources. This marks the first stage of formal interviews for the position.
Brown interviewed for the Knicks job in 2020 but was not hired by the team. However, his strong performance caught the attention of the organization, which ultimately chose Tom Thibodeau as the coach at that time.
Recently, several teams rebuffed the Knicks’ requests to interview coaches from other teams, including Jason Kidd and Quin Snyder. The Mavericks rejected the request, while the Rockets and Timberwolves denied permission for interviews with Kidd and Snyder, respectively.
Brown has a strong coaching record, having led the Kings to their first playoff appearance in 16 years as an NBA coach. He also had two stints as coach in Cleveland and spent one season as Lakers coach. Brown’s career record stands at 455-304, including seven playoff appearances in nine full seasons. He won Coach of the Year twice.
Jenkins, who was fired in March, has served as Grizzlies coach since 2019-20. During his tenure, the team made three postseason appearances and secured one playoff series win. Jenkins will be competing with Brown for the Knicks’ head coaching job.
