The New York Knicks have parted ways with head coach Tom Thibodeau after five seasons. The move was made despite Thibodeau’s impressive track record with the team, which includes a 226-174 overall record and four playoff appearances.
While Thibodeau’s tenure has been marked by success, some players expressed doubts about his coaching style. In March, guard Mikal Bridges questioned Thibodeau’s philosophy of playing starters heavy minutes during the regular season. The group of Hart, Bridges, Jalen Brunson, OG Anunoby and Karl-Anthony Towns had a net rating of minus-6.2 in the postseason.
Thibodeau made changes during the playoffs, replacing Josh Hart with Mitchell Robinson in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals. However, the Knicks were already down 0-2 in the series. Thibodeau’s new coach will have the opportunity to build on the talent and culture established by Thibodeau.
The Knicks’ decision to part ways with Thibodeau comes as they look to rebuild and find a new winning formula.
