Know Your Social Security Payment Date and Amount

The Social Security Administration (SSA) will soon send out its second round of payments for December to millions of recipients. Here’s what you need to know:

Every month, the SSA distributes payments to retired workers, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) recipients. Since January 1, 2025, is a holiday, most people will receive their payment on Tuesday, December 31. However, some banks process payments earlier, meaning those with birthdays between the 11th and 20th may see their money as early as December 18.

If you retired before May 1997 or receive SSI benefits, your payment schedule is different. Your payments are typically deposited during the first few days of the month, regardless of your birthday.

The SSA offers online tools to help track your payment status. The “my Social Security” online account provides details about your upcoming payments, including exact dates and amounts. Creating an account is quick and free.

If you missed a payment, check your bank account or statements first. If it’s still missing, contact your bank or financial institution for information on processing delays. You can also reach out to the SSA directly at 1-800-772-1213 or visit your local office.

Social Security payments vary based on individual factors such as years contributed and age of receiving benefits. The average monthly payment for a retired individual is $1,907, while couples may receive up to $3,303 per month. SSI recipients can expect $943-$1,415 per month.

For specific information on who receives payments on December 18 or other dates, refer to the SSA website. Starting in 2025, SSI payments will automatically increase by 2.5% due to the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA).
