Kohl’s, the Wisconsin-based retailer, plans to close 27 underperforming stores across 15 states by April. The closures represent a small fraction of the company’s overall store fleet, which operates over 1,150 locations across the US. Despite struggling with disappointing sales in recent quarters, Kohl’s has a healthy and profitable business.
The company cited “frankly disappointing” sales as the reason for the closures, but noted that they will take steps to support their customers and teams. Employees at affected stores have the option of applying to another open role or taking a competitive severance package.
Kohl’s has also announced plans to close an e-commerce fulfillment center in San Bernardino, California, due to newer facilities and capabilities making it unnecessary. The company remains committed to its long-term growth strategy while addressing necessary actions to support their business.
