Kojima: Developing Death Stranding 2 During Covid Was ‘Most Difficult Challenge’

Hideo Kojima, creator of the acclaimed game series Death Stranding, has spoken out about the challenges he faced while developing the highly anticipated sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Kojima admits that even his extensive experience in game development couldn’t prepare him for the difficulties he encountered.

Kojima was overcome by a sense of isolation as he worked remotely with his team and struggled to capture the essence of the Australian setting, which serves as the primary backdrop for the game. “I thought I couldn’t pull this off,” Kojima said through an interpreter. “I almost gave up. And also the staff were all remote, and I became sick as well. I thought it was just the end of the world.”

The experience led to a different approach for the sequel, with Kojima re-evaluating the game’s narrative in response to his own feelings of isolation. However, this isolation also highlighted the perils of digital connectivity. Kojima has since undertaken a promotional tour, visiting Australia and meeting film director George Miller at the Sydney Film Festival.

Kojima’s comments provide valuable insights into the challenges faced by developers when working on complex projects during unprecedented times. His willingness to share his experiences serves as a reminder that even experienced creators can struggle with the pressures of game development.
