A local court in Kolkata has found Sanjay Roy, 33, guilty of rape and murder at a state-run hospital where he worked as a civic police volunteer. The conviction brings closure to the brutal case that shook the nation last year.
The 31-year-old doctor was found dead on August 8 night while on duty, leading to a massive probe and protests that paralyzed Bengal. Roy claimed innocence, but his lawyers say he’s being framed. The court rejected this claim and convicted him under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita that deal with rape and murder.
Roy’s defense team had criticized police and hospital authorities, which was found in the evidence. The Additional District and Sessions Court also convicted two other officials, Sandip Ghosh, principal of the medical college, and Abhijit Mondal, former officer of the local police station, for evidence tampering.
The conviction has sparked hope among thousands of doctors who had gone on strike demanding better working conditions. The victim’s father expressed gratitude to the judge, saying he honored his faith in the justice system.
