Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti has claimed victory for his party in Sunday’s parliamentary elections, although partial results show he is short of a majority. His ruling Vetevendosje party holds about 41% of the votes with 88% counted.
Kurti stated that he was confident in forming a government despite this. The center-left party secured more than 40 seats in the 120-member parliament, surpassing the 5% threshold needed to gain representation.
The Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) and Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) also passed the threshold, with PDK polling at 22% and LDK at 18%. The Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK) has 8%.
Previous results in 2021 showed Kurti’s party gaining 50% of the vote. However, this time around, he faces criticism over his handling of the economy and relations with ethnic Serb minorities.
Kurti’s victory is seen as a boost to his popularity, but opposition parties disagree on how to proceed. The center-right LDK has campaigned for joining NATO and restoring relations with the US, while PDK has advocated for a more conciliatory approach.
