Kosovo’s ruling party, Vetevendosje, has won the parliamentary election, but fell short of an outright majority. Preliminary results show that the party secured 41.3% of votes, with Prime Minister Albin Kurti likely to lead the next government.
The outcome sets the stage for a potential coalition government, as moderates worry about a return to ethnic violence in the region. The opposition Democratic Party of Kosovo and the Democratic League of Kosovo party took second and third places, respectively.
Kurti’s victory is significant, but his leadership style has been criticized during the campaign. He insulted potential coalition partners, labeling them “animals” and “thieves.” Analysts say he will need to make a deal with another party or allow the opposition to form the new government.
The election comes amid concerns over corruption, crime, health, and education. However, tensions in the north, where ethnic Serbs live, remain a major issue. Kosovo’s relationship with Serbia and its isolation from the European Union and United States are also looming factors.
The EU had previously placed economic curbs on the country due to its role in regional tensions. The outcome may impact Kosovo’s relations with international partners and its ability to implement policies aimed at extending government control over the north.
