“Kraven the Hunter” has delivered an R-rated origin story for the Spider-Man supervillain. The film follows Sergei Kravinoff, a Russian gangster who was raised to hunt big game by his abusive father Nikolai (Russell Crowe). After being attacked as a teenager, Sergei gained primal animal powers from a witchy potion that saved his life.
The movie’s twisty ending reveals the identity of Sergei’s half-brother Dmitri, played by Fred Hechinger. Dmitri is captured by the Rhino and held for ransom, leading Kraven to track him down and save his brother. However, it is revealed that Nikolai had set all this up, wanting his son to join him in their family business.
Kraven’s character takes a dark turn when he kills his unprotected father. But before dying, Nikolai leaves behind the iconic lion’s mane coat that Kraven wears in the comics. The film also introduces another Spider-Man villain, the Chameleon, played by Christopher Abbott, who has the ability to shape-shift and mimic the voices of others.
The movie ends with a surprising reveal: Dmitri has become the Chameleon, taking over his father’s crime operation. A post-credits scene is absent, which may be due to Sony’s last efforts to give side Spidey characters their own solo movies.
