“Kraven the Hunter” Falls Flat as Latest Spider-Man Misfire

Sony’s attempt to stock up on Spider-Man villains continues with its latest misfire, “Kraven the Hunter.” Director J.C. Chandor struggles to shape a coherent narrative, letting the movie meander through unnecessary origin stories and over-the-top action sequences.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as Kraven, a Russian mobster-turned-superhero with abilities that are never fully explained. The screenplay attempts to build Kraven’s backstory but devolves into adding origin stories for third-rate villains, including The Rhino and The Foreigner.

The film tries to explore themes of masculinity but is hindered by poor pacing and character development. Russell Crowe shines as Kraven’s father, a tough-as-nails Russian mobster with a thick accent, while Alessandro Nivola overacts as a human-rhino hybrid. The movie’s climax is marred by distracting special effects and a lack of clarity around Kraven’s motivations.

With its weak villainous cast, poor pacing, and unsatisfying conclusion, “Kraven the Hunter” fails to deliver on its promise of an engaging Spider-Man spin-off.
