Kristen Stewart sat down with actress Kim Gordon at Hyde Beach ahead of her directorial debut “The Chronology of Water” premiere at Cannes. The film, which Stewart has been working on since 2018, tackles difficult themes and secrets often hidden from women. Stewart discussed the challenges she faced in making the film, citing a lack of marketability and industry politics that prevent women artists from speaking their truth.
For Stewart, making the film was a personal journey to uncover her own voice. She has been open about sharing her thoughts too early in the past, which led to delays in production. However, she credits this approach for allowing her to share her vision with the world.
“I’ve lived so kind of transparently,” Stewart said. “It’s interesting that I was talking about it in 2018. I probably shouldn’t have because most movies are a decade in the making.” Despite the challenges, Stewart is proud of the result and believes the film sheds light on women’s experiences with pain, pleasure, and secrecy.
Stewart also emphasized the importance of trusting oneself and listening to one’s inner voice over industry politics. “If you’ve got a sneaking suspicion, it’s not sneaky,” she said. “You’ve just been told to shut up for too long.” With her debut film under her belt, Stewart is excited to direct another project soon, vowing to break the mold of industry stereotypes and create more inclusive films.
The 2025 Cannes Film Festival has also seen other notable directors share their perspectives on their work.
