Animal lovers in Los Angeles have banded together to support shelter animals affected by this month’s wildfires. Local shelters, social media groups, and organizations like Best Friends Animal Society are working together to provide aid and find forever homes for displaced pets.
The Santa Monica Animal Shelter remains open and has reported that all animals are safe. However, many dogs at the shelter have been waiting over a year for adoption in an increasingly stressful environment due to the wildfires.
Best Friends Animal Society is helping shelters by relocating hundreds of dogs and cats from impacted areas to its Pet Adoption Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. Even temporary fostering can make a significant difference in available space for displaced pets.
Rebecca Polaha, a local animal lover, fostered Jae Jae, a 12-year-old Shepherd, for five days, helping clear space at the shelter. Polaha emphasized the importance of adopting and fostering to help those affected by the wildfires.
Social media groups, such as “Save LA Fire Pets” and “Lost Pets of the Pacific Palisades Fire and surrounding Los Angeles area,” have been instrumental in reuniting displaced residents with their lost pets.
