LA Cat Bird Flu Outbreak Sparks Health Alert

Los Angeles health officials are investigating three cats suspected of having bird flu after two other felines in the household died from consuming recalled raw milk. The infected cats displayed symptoms such as lack of appetite, fever, and neurologic signs before testing positive for H5 bird flu.

The three new cats who may be infected with bird flu all lived together, prompting authorities to monitor humans who came into contact with them. Experts warn that cats are highly susceptible to bird flu due to their cellular receptors allowing the virus to mix and mutate.

A recent study found that cat cells provide a bridge for reassortment of avian and mammalian influenza viruses, raising concerns for transmission and public health. Meanwhile, 61 human cases of bird flu have been reported in the US since April, with most patients having contact with infected cattle or livestock.

To avoid the spread of disease, residents are advised to avoid consuming raw milk and undercooked meat products, limit contact with sick animals, report sick or dead birds, and keep pets away from wild animals. Public health officials also recommend removing bird feeders and baths to reduce the risk of virus transmission.
