The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has approved a motion to explore an ordinance that would allow families to recover an employee’s last paycheck if the employee is unavailable, regardless of their immigration status. The ordinance, which would apply only to small businesses in unincorporated areas, aims to support families affected by recent immigration raids.
The move responds to growing concerns among families whose loved ones have been detained or deported. Chair and First District Supervisor Hilda Solis says the county must find ways to protect vulnerable residents. “This motion is about ensuring we provide a pathway for families and workers to receive their hard-earned last paycheck, regardless of immigration status.”
The action builds on earlier work by Solis in addressing immigration issues affecting workers. However, many families continue to struggle accessing an employee’s final paycheck due to ongoing immigration enforcement.
Supervisor Lindsey Horvath says the county should not let federal immigration actions create harm in communities. The motion directs the county to develop a communication strategy for employers and supports statewide legislative proposals requiring employers to offer employees a designation form.
This move aims to provide relief to families affected by immigration raids, ensuring they receive the paychecks owed to them.
