Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has signed an executive order aimed at reducing production costs and streamlining the permitting process for film shoots. The measure requires only a single city staffer on set, compared to multiple staff members currently needed, including firefighters and police officers.
Bass’ administration is also exploring ways to hire a film liaison, who would better understand the needs of filmmakers, according to producer Jamie Patricof. The mayor’s goal is to make Los Angeles an attractive destination for production, despite its high costs.
The order includes provisions to establish guidelines for iconic locations like Griffith Observatory and Central Library, reduce fees, and shorten review timelines. While the measure does not guarantee a single staffer will be required, it requires justification in writing if additional personnel are needed.
This effort is part of a broader push by city leaders to make Los Angeles more film-friendly, as the industry faces a global downturn. The California Legislature has also proposed expanding the state tax incentive for film and TV production from $330 million to $750 million per year.
