Lab-grown Pet Food Hits UK Shelves as Regulators Approve Cultivated Meat

Lab-grown pet food is coming to UK shelves as regulators give Meatly the green light to sell its cultivated chicken pet food.

Meatly took a small sample of cells from an egg, provided it with nutrients and grew the cells in a lab. The company claims its product is safe, nutritious and free from genetically modified organisms (GMOs), antibiotics, harmful pathogens, heavy metals and other impurities.

The regulatory approval marks a significant milestone for Europe’s cultivated meat industry, according to Meatly’s CEO Owen Ensor. He says the company is proving that there is a safe and low-capital way to rapidly bring cultivated meat to market.

Meatly plans to start selling its pet food later this year and aims to reduce costs and scale production to reach industrial volumes within three years.
