The US Labor Department’s new Chief Information Officer (CIO) plans to reduce its staff by about 30%, according to an agency source. Thomas Shedd, who took on the role last month, aims to achieve this through voluntary departures and reduction-in-force efforts.
The CIO office will focus on systems used for benefit disbursement and programs required by law that need business systems and software to operate. The department will prioritize efficiency and consolidation while maintaining value.
Several offices may see staff reductions, including Client Engagement, Technology Innovation and Engineering, Administration and Governance, and Digital Transformation directorates. Shedd also wears multiple hats within the Trump administration, serving in a role with the General Services Administration’s Technology Transformation Services.
Shedd previously led efforts to close down GSA’s 18F digital services team.
