Lady Gaga Stuns Rio With Free Concert Amid Decade-Long Wait

Brazilians have been waiting over a decade for US singer Lady Gaga to perform in the country, and excitement is at fever pitch ahead of her free mega-concert in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday. Fans, known as “little monsters,” decked out in T-shirts, wigs, and baseball caps emblazoned with Gaga’s image have been flooding Copacabana beach.

Victor Faro, a 39-year-old fan from neighboring Espirito Santo state, braved the early morning chill to be as close to the stage as possible. Cinthia Rodrigues, a 28-year-old content creator, described Gaga as a “mother figure” and expressed her eagerness for a historic concert.

Rio is no stranger to mega-events, with its massive Carnival festivities attracting 1.6 million people each year. Lady Gaga’s gig is expected to bring in millions of dollars into the local economy by drawing tourists and stimulating economic activity.

Merchandise traders were doing brisk business ahead of the concert, with fans waiting in line for up to an hour to buy items inspired by Gaga’s iconic style, including a tank top emblazoned with her “meat dress” from the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. The concert is expected to boost local businesses by up to 70 percent compared to a regular week.
