Los Angeles FC secured a spot in the FIFA Club World Cup after defeating Club America in an intense play-off match at BMO Stadium. The game ended 1-1, with both teams playing extra time before Gabon international Denis Bouanga scored the winning goal five minutes into overtime.
The one-off match was organized after the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld FIFA’s decision to exclude Mexican side Club Leon from the tournament due to multi-club ownership regulations. Club America faced LAFC in the play-off, while Brazilian Igor Jesus gave LAFC a lifeline with an equalizing goal in the 89th minute.
LAFC’s 38-year-old forward Oliver Giroud provided crucial support before his teammate Bouanga scored the winner. The team will face Chelsea in their opening Group D fixture at Atalanta on June 16, followed by matches against Flamengo and Esperance Sportive de Tunis.
